He was buried in a casket that was made by a fellow firefighter and longtime friend. The weather was perfect for graveside services, and the service was officiated by a LCCFRS volunteer chaplain. And, per his request, we do not believe that anyone’s fishing plans were interrupted!
Chief Carter was buried with his fire helmet, a can of Coke, a pine cone from his vacation home, and a red hankerchief like those he always seemed to have on him 24/7/365. His gravesite overlooks a pond rumored to have good fishing reports.
Many of the longtime Aldie volunteers and LCFR career staff reunited to say goodbye. Many citizens, friends, and other LCCFRS Volunteer agencies were also in attendance. Some attendees traveled hundreds of miles for the service.
We would like to thank Leesburg VFC for use of their social hall last night, Purcellville VFD for their chaplain assistance, and LCFR for their offers of logistical assistance. We would also like to thank all citizens and agencies who have called, texted, stopped by, or have otherwise checked on us during this time. Chief Carter would have been humbled by the hundreds of people who attended the visitation and/or his funeral. |
